The worm profile of toroidal worm drive is a rotary surface formed by rotating a concave arc around the worm curve, so it is called toroidal rotary surface worm, or toroidal worm for short.
The type of toroidal worm drive depends on the generatrix or main body that forms the helical tooth surface. When the generatrix is a straight line, it is called straight profile toroidal worm drive (TSL type). When the main body is flat. It is called plane enveloping worm drive. Plane enveloping worm drive generally refers to plane once enveloping worm drive (TVP type) and plane secondary enveloping worm drive (TOP type).
In the plane once enveloping worm drive, there are straight tooth plane enveloping worm drive and helical tooth plane enveloping worm drive.
Straight profile enveloping worm drive (TSL type) and planar secondary envelope worm drive are both multi-tooth contact and double contact line contact. Although the plane once enveloping worm drive is a single contact line contact, but also has the advantages of multi-tooth contact, so its transmission efficiency and load carrying capacity are also much larger than the cylindrical worm transmission.
The plane enveloping worm is relatively easy to achieve accurate machining and hardening grinding that fully conforms to its meshing principle, especially for the worm gear of the plane once enveloping worm drive, no hob is needed, so the process is more simple.
